Interview - Sabella
You had your E.P launch recently at Plug, how did you enjoy the night?
We loved it, it was such a buzz to see such a big crowd for our first headline hometown show. It was a special night for us.
Releasing an E.P is pretty big for any band, how was it received on the night and by people who have bought it from you?
Yeah, we've been selling the new EP for a few weeks so a lot of people have already bought it but we haven't properly gigged in Sheffield for a few months so we labelled it as an EP launch. We had a surge of people wanting to buy a copy after the gig, and everyone seems to be digging it. The word is getting round too. Exciting times!
You've also played a few gigs outside of Sheffield, is there a specific venue/city that has really caught the imagination of Sabella?
We're trying to do more gigs outside of Sheffield. We just love playing to music fans and meeting people. We really don't have a preference of cities. If we had to choose our favourite venue, well, we all love The Leadmill in Sheffield, so it'd probably be that one at the moment. We've watched some of our favourite bands there, so we're really proud to have played there ourselves.
Quickly, explain to those who may not know what the name Sabella means.
Our lead guitarist's dad is a big football fan and when Tony (our guitarist) was a lad, his dad used to tell him stories about how good a player Alejandro Sabella was. He was an Argentinian player who played for Sheffield United in the late 70's. Also, 'Sabella' means 'God's promise' in Latin, so we just had to have it! Only 2 of us like football so it's quite strange that we're named after a football player really!
You're playing at Mosborough Festival this summer with The Farm and The Twang. Are these bands you enjoy listening to? Who else on the line up are you looking forward to seeing?
Yeah, it'll be a proper good old sing along gig with The Farm headlining. It's going to be mint. We love Marquis Drive, they always get the crowd going and they're just lovely people.
As well as Mosborough, do you have any gigs planned for Tramlines?
We're yet to announce our plans for tramlines. Keep your eyes peeled for announcements!
Finally, when is your next gig?
As it stands, Mosborough Music Festival is the next one. We'll be announcing more gigs soon.
