Interview: Kyle Baker
Kyle, you recently released you e.p, what’s the response been like so far?
I released my debut album in January, and with being unsigned, doing it all off my own back was a challenge. But, I did all I could to get it out there and the response I've had has been incredible, with some great reviews of which I'm very grateful for. Seeing people singing along to the lyrics at gigs, getting the songs played on the radio, and people are taking an interest, makes me believe something special is happening!
You released it at the Royal Standard, how did that all go?
The album launch at the Royal Standard, was one of the best nights of my life. We sold it out with a 200 capacity, and walking out onto that stage to the words 'Good Evening Sheffield!' will always stand as one of my proudest moments. It was also the first ever gig with the full band, and the feedback from how we sounded as a band was really positive! The gig was also in aid of Parkinson's UK, I chose this charity because my grandpa suffered with the illness, and it made me very proud to raise so much money for this cause.
We saw you playing with a band, care to introduce the rest to us?
The band consists of Keith - the drummer, Rich- lead guitarist, Matt - Keyboardist, and Alex on backing vocals. They're all extremely talented musicians, and I feel lucky to have such a great band!
Outside of Sheffield, where else have you played that has really stuck in the memory?
Outside of Sheffield, I feel that is the next step I need to take. I'm currently planning a mini UK tour for this year to get my debut album outside of South Yorkshire, and I'm ready to take it to the next level!
And back to Sheffield, which bands should we keep an eye out for?
Sheffield bands to look out for - I'd say The Monday Club, I've gigged with these guys a few times and they're definitely one for the future. Also, I've always been a fan of the Blind Drivers.
If you had to pick one song which really shaped the style of music you now write, what would you say it would be?
The song I'd pick, would probably have to be 'Scaffolding on the Minster'. It's one that people remember, fast paced with gritty lyrics. A rock and roll vibe, and it is just 'Life as We Know It'. I think people relate with the lyrics: 'Everything's a mess but it's not my problem, I'm just your average lad from Rotherham' always goes down well!!
Finally, what’s next for Kyle Baker?
In 2014, I want to plan a mini UK tour and try and get my album out to the nation. Then in January 2015 I plan to go to New Zealand. Whilst I'm there I want to write another album about coming out of Sheffield and seeing the world and new experiences, because I see that as the way forward to my music career.
