Interview - John Lennon McCullagh
John, how are you finding the 'Rock 'n' Roll' lifestyle so far?
Me and my dad have a lot of fun on the road, but it can be quite stressful and hard work at times. Hopefully if I keep putting all my effort into to it, it will pay off. Like everything it has it's up's and downs, but things seem to be going well so far.
You left school at 15 (I think I'm right in saying), has music always been your passion - or was there something else you equally enjoyed as well?
When I was younger I was obsessed with football, but as I've grown up I've learnt to appreciate literature more and more - and obviously books like 'On The Road' inspire my song writing. Music has always been the prominent figure in my life, I've been brought up with it.
How and when did you first meet Alan McGee?
I met him at the first gig I ever did in Rotherham, at a place he was doing at DJ set.
Your first gig in Sheffield must seem like an eternity away, where was it and how much of it do you remember?
It does seem a very long time ago. It was at a venue called Delaney's Music Bar. I sang my heart out to about three half concious people, but I carried on nevertheless. It was a big learning curve.
Now, you've flown the nest of Sheffield and are playing throughout Europe as well now. Which has been your favourite gig outside of Sheffield?
Without a doubt King Tuts Wah Wah Hut. The atmosphere was electrifying. It was one of the first gigs where I felt my music was truly appreciated, as I looked up and everyone was singing my own lyrics back to me. The very same lyrics I had written in my bedroom months previously.
Who has been the biggest personal influence on your career so far?
Well, if you listen to any of my songs, you can hear the folk roots. Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Phil Ochs have all had a major influence on my writing style. Career-wise, my Dad has given full support plus the courage and confidence I need on my journey.
Musically, you have a very defined style...any guilty pleasures you'd care to share with us?
Recently - and unexpectedly - I've been listening to a few great rap artists. Whyclef Jean is absolutely brilliant and I also have a soft spot for Eminem. Its suprising even to myself, but their lyrics really speak volumes.
Finally then John, what's in the pipeline for you?
Well, I've got a few shows coming up in May at a few venues in Holland. There's also some exciting plans for my next album, which I'll be recording over the upcoming months.
